ART 341 - Photography and Social Justice


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: Social Justice
 

Practice-based study of photography, including visual communication, documentary and fine art skills, for social justice. Projects consider challenges and opportunities of using photography for social justice. Activity Units: 3.

Prerequisites: ART 101.
Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 6 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate technical proficiency in digital photography, including exposure, composition, sequencing, and post-production.
  2. Produce cohesive photographic series that combine technical execution with conceptual depth.
  3. Critically analyze how individual photographers have represented social justice issues and struggles, past and present, locally and nationally.
  4. Use photography as a tool to document, critique, or reimagine issues of equity, identity, and justice.
  5. Evaluate ethical considerations in photographing communities and individuals, including power, consent, and representation.
  6. Apply theories from assigned readings to interpret and critique images.
  7. Articulate the social and artistic intentions behind their work through written artist statements and reflective essays.
  8. Prepare and present photographic work for critique, public exhibition, and community-facing engagement.

  1. Use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity.
  2. Describe the challenges to achieving social justice.
  3. Identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
