SOC 491 - Professional Development

Explores career paths for Sociology majors. Students will develop professional skills, create a strong resume, learn how to write effective cover letters, practice job interview skills, and explore relevant graduate programs including potentially creating an application packet for graduate school. 

Strongly Recommended Preparation:  

SOC 100
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Develop a career direction by identifying three top choices for career path and what is required to enter into each profession.
  2. Demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively and professionally with individuals in positions of authority.
  3. Write an effective resume and cover letter to prepare to enter the job market.
  4. Identify best practices for future job interviews.
  5. Understand what careers require a graduate degree and how to apply for graduate school.
