NURS 328 - Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing


Units: 2
Introduces promotion of mental health, therapeutic communication used to establish a professional, caring nurse-client relationship, evidence-based therapeutics including psychopharmacology, and recovery model applied across continuum of care. Focus on integrating knowledge about mental and physical health and developing clinical judgment. 

Prerequisites: Nursing majors only and: NURS 310, NURS 309, NURS 312, NURS 307, NURS 308, NURS 316, NURS 318
Co-requisites: NURS 329.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Implement nursing care that is consistent with evidence-based practice to promote mental health and prevent, assess, intervene, and evaluate treatment for mental health disorders 
  2. Prioritize person-centered care and self-management of chronic health conditions
  3. Demonstrate therapeutic communication to establish trusting relationships with individuals across the lifespan
  4. Integrate knowledge of physical and mental health, legal and ethical considerations, and sociocultural and economic factors to inform clinical judgement
  5. Use evidence-based health, cognitive, psychosocial, and mental status assessment tools to evaluate personal health and establish a plan to promote personal health, self-care, and wellbeing.
