SOC 390 - Sociological Research Methods


Units: 4
Review of sociological research methods with an emphasis on learning: appropriate selection and use of different methods; the limitations and strengths of each method; and, practicing qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.

Prerequisites: STAT 100, SOC 300, and SOC 301W.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative social science methodologies, including their strengths and weaknesses. 
  2. Be able to develop a clear research question and select an appropriate method to collect, interpret and analyze data. 
  3. Recognize and critically assess “knowledge claims.” 
  4. Read, integrate, and synthesize abstract sociological analyzes and theories presented in peer reviewed journals and books.
  5. Understand how to use conceptualization and operationalization to establish accurate, reliable, and valid measurements.
  6. Explain the complexity of ethical dilemmas in social science research and why ethical guidelines are important.
