SOC 390 - Sociological Research Methods Units: 4 Review of sociological research methods with an emphasis on learning: appropriate selection and use of different methods; the limitations and strengths of each method; and, practicing qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
Prerequisites: STAT 100, SOC 300, and SOC 301W. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative social science methodologies, including their strengths and weaknesses.
- Be able to develop a clear research question and select an appropriate method to collect, interpret and analyze data.
- Recognize and critically assess “knowledge claims.”
- Read, integrate, and synthesize abstract sociological analyzes and theories presented in peer reviewed journals and books.
- Understand how to use conceptualization and operationalization to establish accurate, reliable, and valid measurements.
- Explain the complexity of ethical dilemmas in social science research and why ethical guidelines are important.
