COMM 404 - Qualitative Study of Communication: Methods II Units: 4 Knowledge and practice of qualitative communication research methods, through a social justice lens. A self-chosen media social problem case study serves as the scaffold for a semester-long high-impact hands-on primary audience research experience.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Junior or Senior standing. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identification of a media social problem
- Identification and description of audience members/end users
- Identification of specific media categories and genres of content
- Secondary research and how to write a conceptual literature review
- Human subject research ethics and Institutional Review Board requirements
- Case study research design and protocols
- Applying assigned methods of qualitative data collection, may include Historical Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, Participant Observation, Depth Interviewing
- Applying inductive analysis
- Writing and presenting a qualitative research report
