ENGL 260 - Videogame Storytelling


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
Introduction to structures of storytelling and narrative formation in video games. How do video games use or transform age-old narrative structures found in books, films, or other media? How do video games use storytelling techniques to engage with contemporary issues?

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Analyze how traditional narrative structures appear in video games and compare them to their uses in traditional storytelling media
  2. Identify and critique the storytelling techniques unique to video games
  3. Articulate the role of player agency and interactivity in narrative formation
  4. Identify and explain moments that illustrate how video games engage with contemporary issues through narrative
