SW 412 - Generalist Practice II Units: 4 This is the second foundation course in generalist practice. The course orients students to the major areas of small group, community, and organizational practice with particular emphasis on work with disenfranchised and oppressed populations.
Prerequisites: BSW major. Successful completion of SW 300, SW 301, SW 325W, and SW 411. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify and use generalist practice skills which are sensitive to the social, cultural, racial, spiritual, and class backgrounds, as well as gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental health of clients and client systems.
- Use current research, technology and evidence-based information to identify appropriate interventions and to monitor and evaluate practice outcomes for families and groups.
- Identify and facilitate stages of group development and dynamics to achieve group goals.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the values and ethics that guide culturally competent social work practice at the mezzo and macro levels, including principles of supervision, leadership, and management and roles in groups.
- Integrate selected theories of human bio-psycho-socio-spiritual development within groups, organizations and communities, including theories of supervision, management, and leadership, and demonstrate understanding of the historical application of these theories in foundation generalist social work practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of factors that have historically led to oppression and social and economic injustice such as race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, age, religion, and ability on individuals and families within the context of organizations and communities and their responses to these stressors to advocate on behalf of those communities.
