MLL 171 - Elementary Korean I: Language & Humanities


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
The first semester of a one-year sequence in elementary Korean. An introduction to the basic skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. A communicative approach to the acquisition of the language with emphasis on the appreciation of the culture.

Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Recognize the fundamental phonetic components and intonations in Korean and pronounce words and sentences with a reasonable level of precision
  2. Read and comprehend simple written materials by using the combinations of the Korean Alphabet “Hangeul”
  3. Compose basic words, expressions, and sentences using the Korean writing system
  4. Attain an understanding of the fundamental grammatical patterns in Korean sentences
  5. Engage in brief conversations on daily life subjects like greetings, places, time, numbers, and activities by using culturally appropriate expressions (C2-1,2, 3)
  6. Examine and understand diverse elements of Korean culture, beliefs, history, and identity (C2-1, 2, 3,)
  7. Explore and gain deeper insights into the educational aspects and cultural identity in Korea and the Korean-American community in the United States (C2- 1,2, 3)
