MUS 303 - Entrepreneurship in the Arts


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-3
 

Learn about arts careers and organizations by investigating artists, entrepreneurs, and administrators. Build skills in networking and personal branding and examine case studies of a variety of artistic ventures.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-3 - Upper Division Arts or Humanities
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs).
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area 3 requirements (lower division Area C requirements for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs).
Possible Instructional Methods: Online-Asynchronous or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Explain how issues of power and social identity has affected the career options for different cultural and economic groups in various arts disciplines in recent history;
  2. Describe various logistical and business aspects of arts industries and explain how important individuals and organizations in the arts have achieved success in spite of (or because of) issues of power and social identity;
  3. Identify your own possible career paths in the arts and demonstrate the ability to use the primary tools needed to market yourself, such as résumés and cover letters, professional websites, and social media and online media accounts;
  4. Through research, construct a personal marketing plan to achieve success on at least one possible career path.


GE-UD-3. Upper-division Arts or Humanities Learning Outcomes
 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply principles, methodologies, values systems, and thought processes employed in the arts and humanities.
  2. Analyze cultural production as an expression of, or reflection upon, what it means to be human.
  3. Demonstrate how the perspectives of the arts or humanities are used by informed, engaged, and reflective citizens to benefit local and global communities.
