SPAN 447 - Latin American Global and Cultural Studies Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-3 Single author, country, movement, theme or current social issues in Spanish/Latin American literature and culture in a global context. Taught in Spanish, readings in Spanish and English.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-3 - Upper Division Arts or Humanities Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs); and SPAN 343 or MLL 343. Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area 3 requirements (lower division Area C requirements for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs). Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 15 units when content changes. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of contemporary critical theories related to a single author, country, movement, theme or current social issues in Spanish American literature and culture in a global context
- Students will be able to link disciplines such as cultural studies and post-colonial theory, including perspectives developed by Spanish/Latin American scholars
- Students will demonstrate knowledge about current debates about race, gender, hybridity, migration, border cultures, environment, and/or social movements and resistance in particular historical period of Spanish/Latin America
- Students will learn the diversity and connections of cultural production of Spanish/Latin America such as literature, popular culture, films, visual arts, music, etc. in a global context
- Students will improve their research skills by seeking, evaluating, and synthesizing journal articles and database resources to support their oral presentations and written assignments
