EPSY 301 - Orientation to Careers in Counseling


Units: 3
Overview of counseling profession and different types of employment using counseling skills through self awareness activities; assists students with career/major choices. Skills and licenses required for marriage and family, career, school, rehabilitation and substance-abuse counseling.

Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Apply basic principles of counseling, psychology, and human development to the process of exploring careers within the human services sector.
  2. Describe (orally and in writing) how diversity within human societies influences our understanding of individual and societal human behavior. Identify careers within the counseling field and the skills and traits necessary for success.
  3. Present a personal development plan (including major and career goals) based upon the analysis of personal traits and skills necessary for success in a counseling career.
  4. Compare and Contrast the roles and relative strengths of para-professionals (including peer support workers) and traditional mental health providers.
