EESC 397 - Advanced Field Experience


Units: 2
 

Applied field based inquiry activities to develop advanced field skills, common to field research and professional activity in the Earth, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences. Students spend extended periods in a natural, outdoor laboratory setting.

Prerequisites: GEOL 297, junior or senior standing.
Repeatability: May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units when content varies.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Consistently and accurately self-locate and navigate using topographic maps, a pocket transit compass, and advanced GPS methods
  2. Identify, interpret and characterize intermediate to complex geo-environmental systems and processes, evaluate their origins and/or remediation
  3. Identify, measure and collect data from environmental systems using sophisticated earth science and environmental tools and methods
  4. Compile and construct syntheses based on field observations, data, subsequent analysis, and peer/group interaction.
  5. Exhibit competence in a field environment and an understanding of standard safety standards and protocols.
