GEOL 102 - Earth Sciences Laboratory


Units: 1 ; Breadth Area: GE-5C
Laboratory investigation of the Earth system: solid Earth, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and solar system. Geologic materials, maps, earthquakes, landslides, weather, oceans and currents, planets. Required field trip.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-5C - Lower Division Physical and Biological Sciences (Laboratory)
Co-requisites: GEOL 101.
Credit Restrictions: Not for Geology or Environmental Sciences major or minor credit.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Students who complete this course will be able to: Demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of the fundamental materials, tools and principles of the Earth Sciences by applying these core ideas to analyze natural processes.
  2. In this course these fundamental principles and knowledge include: Identification and classification of rocks and minerals;
  3. Introduction to and practice using topographic, geologic and surface materials maps to interpret geologic environments.
  4. Collect, analyze and interpret field and laboratory data, including graphing of results.
  5. Manipulate physical models of the major earth systems such as the oceans and Solar Systems.
  6. Make field observations and interpret natural and anthropogenic structures affected by fauling and erosion.
