Analysis and contextualization of global design histories from the invention of printing through interactive and digital media. Examines how designers have responded to or challenged cultural expectations through their practices.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe historical and contemporary works of graphic art and design using appropriate terminology;
- Analyze representative works of graphic arts, applied arts, and design from around the world in terms of historical contexts and cultural values;
- Evaluate the evolving social, political, economic, and aesthetic impacts of graphic arts and design, including the roles played by designers and important technological innovations;
- Relate histories of design to personal experiences with designed images or objects.
- Collaborate with peers in the study of graphic arts and design history.
