CHEM 100 - Introduction to College Chemistry

Elementary principles of chemistry, including experimentation and science practices: measurement, properties of matter, periodic table, energy conversion and transfer, phase changes, chemical reactions, atomic theory, laws of conservation of matter and energy, reaction rates, thermal and chemical equilibria, nuclear reactions. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 1

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Classify and describe physical and chemical changes.
  2. Explain the periodic properties of elements and the relation to atomic structure.
  3. Quantify the composition of substances.
  4. Rationalize the structure of some simple molecules.
  5. Describe basic nuclear transformations and their application to energy and medicine.
  6. Analyze chemical measurements.
  7. Utilize standard laboratory safety practices.
