ENGL 355W - Language, Gender, and Social Change Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D; Social Justice; UWR Critical analysis of gender as it shapes and is reflected in spoken and written discourse. Focus on social consequences of gender differences in language, linguistic agency in continuing/resisting/transforming traditional gender norms in various personal and public contexts. Must earn C- (CR) or better for UWR credit.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better, completion of second composition with a grade of C- (CR) or better, upper division standing. For English Majors only. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- summarize competing perspectives on issues of communication, difference and diversity, especially as they relate to gender;
- demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which issues of gender impact interpersonal communication and participation in larger social structures;
- apply sociolinguistic concepts and methods to the description and analysis of the ways in which gender shapes and is reflected in spoken and written discourse diverse discourse communities; and
- develop and explore a research question related to language and gender.

- analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;
