BIOL 430 - Microbial Physiology and Metabolism Units: 3 Microbial function and biology required to fully understand microbial growth relevant to medical and economic importance, including the exploitation of microbial processes for biotechnological advancement.
Prerequisites: BIOL 330 with C- or better, and either CHEM 340 or CHEM 441 with C- or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe metabolic responses by various groups of bacteria to optimal and worst growth conditions;
- Articulate biochemical mediation of bacterial movement;
- Describe bacterial strategies for altering their environments in order to foster and maintain their growth;
- Discuss the pros and cons of bacterial sporulation;
- Provide examples of applied uses of microbiome research;
- Compare and contrast microbial and animal responses to stress and survival;
- Describe anaerobic and aerobic forms of microbial metabolism;
- Communicate the relationships between microbial metabolism and virulence.
