BIOL 430 - Microbial Physiology and Metabolism

Microbial function and biology required to fully understand microbial growth relevant to medical and economic importance, including the exploitation of microbial processes for biotechnological advancement.

Prerequisites: BIOL 330 with C- or better, and either CHEM 340 or CHEM 441 with C- or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Describe metabolic responses by various groups of bacteria to optimal and worst growth conditions;
Articulate biochemical mediation of bacterial movement;
Describe bacterial strategies for altering their environments in order to foster and maintain their growth;
Discuss the pros and cons of bacterial sporulation;
Provide examples of applied uses of microbiome research;
Compare and contrast microbial and animal responses to stress and survival;
Describe anaerobic and aerobic forms of microbial metabolism;
Communicate the relationships between microbial metabolism and virulence.
