NURS 423 - Leadership in Nursing

Leadership and management theories and their application to healthcare issues and nursing practice.

Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major and all of: NURS 410, NURS 411, NURS 412, NURS 413, NURS 414, NURS 415.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Apply selected leadership and management theories for professional development and to manage healthcare situations.
  2. Develop communication techniques for optimal interdisciplinary team communication and conflict management.
  3. Apply principles of team building to group interactions.
  4. Apply principles of delegation, time management, and supervision to practice situations.
  5. Explore concepts of quality management to improve patient safety and outcomes.
  6. Understand principles of healthcare financing and budgeting.
  7. Apply principles of negotiation and conflict management to healthcare team situations.
  8. Describe union and professional organization influences on nursing practice.
  9. Describe the impact of organizational structure, technology, economic incentives, legislation, hierarchy, and culture on healthcare systems.
  10. Develop and promote health care advocacy as a professional responsibility
