NURS 423 - Leadership in Nursing Units: 2 Leadership and management theories and their application to healthcare issues and nursing practice.
Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major and all of: NURS 410, NURS 411, NURS 412, NURS 413, NURS 414, NURS 415. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Apply selected leadership and management theories for professional development and to manage healthcare situations.
- Develop communication techniques for optimal interdisciplinary team communication and conflict management.
- Apply principles of team building to group interactions.
- Apply principles of delegation, time management, and supervision to practice situations.
- Explore concepts of quality management to improve patient safety and outcomes.
- Understand principles of healthcare financing and budgeting.
- Apply principles of negotiation and conflict management to healthcare team situations.
- Describe union and professional organization influences on nursing practice.
- Describe the impact of organizational structure, technology, economic incentives, legislation, hierarchy, and culture on healthcare systems.
- Develop and promote health care advocacy as a professional responsibility
