SPED 602A - Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Etiology


Units: 2
Characteristics and etiology of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Description and implementation of strategies for addressing social, communication, behavior, and academic needs of individuals wise spectrum disorders. This is an online course.

Prerequisites: Enrollment in the Education Specialist Program.
Possible Instructional Methods: Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge of current diagnostic criteria and context of autism spectrum disorders. TPE 1
2. Describe and critically discuss current issues and trends related to the programming for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. TPE 2, 4
3. Differentiate and examine knowledge of current definitions, person first language, and the precedence archaic terms helped establish. TPE 6
4. Recognize various co-morbid diagnoses that often co-exist with autism spectrum disorders. TPE 6
5. Recognize and critically discuss life span issues for persons with autism spectrum disorders. TPE 4
6. Analyze family issues, parent/guardian involvement, and parent/guardian-professional relationships to individuals with autism spectrum disorders. TPE 6
