MLL 358 - Experiencing Japanese Culture in English Translation Units: 3 Spanning from the Meiji Restoration to the 21st century, this course covers topics such as technology, food, nationalism, anime and manga in the visual arts, and the cultural transformation that took place over the course of the 20th century.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe Japanese traditions and their role in Japanese society
- Identify major time periods and events in Japanese history
- Analyze aspects of Japanese culture and how they impact Japanese identities, society, and world perceptions
- Analyze the cultural transformation that took place in Japan from the modern to post-modern eras and how it is demonstrated in Japan today
- Evaluate your pre-assumptions about Japanese culture and consider how your views change as you learn more about the culture
