MLL 251 - Intermediate Japanese I: Kanji Logographic Cultures


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2
The first semester of the intermediate course. Increased emphasis on the structure of the language, vocabulary building, conversation, appreciation of Japanese culture, and on training intermediate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing Japanese.

Prerequisites: MLL 152 or MLL 153.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Describe aspects of Japanese culture using appropriate grammar and vocabulary in writing and speech
  2. Use intermediate-level sentence structure and grammar rules beyond MLL 152 in writing and speech
  3. Participate in intermediate-level conversations by listening and responding appropriately
  4. Assess social situations to determine when to use casual, polite, and honorific forms
  5. Write sentences using Kanji characters and identify Kanji characters in written text
  6. Demonstrate an appreciation of the Japanese culture and arts using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity
  7. Develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry
