SLHS 304 - Introduction to Communication Disorders

Units: 3
Comprehensive review of disorders of communication, cognition and swallowing across the lifespan for students in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Topics introduced include disorders of speech, language, cognition and swallowing while introducing basic tenets of professional writing and communication.

Prerequisites: Declared major in B.S. Speech Pathology and Audiology, or admitted graduate student.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

State the basic tenets of ASHA’s Code of Ethics; describe the scope of practice of speech language pathology (SLP) and explain the process for becoming licensed and certified as an SLP.
Identify at least four distinct practice settings (and their unique features) in Speech-Language Pathology.
Develop a thorough understanding of the Intl Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.
List major categories of speech/language/cognitive disorders in adults and children with at least 2 examples of each.
Gain a working knowledge about an SLP’s role in managing swallowing disorders.
Demonstrate the ability to read and summarize in writing, short articles from the field of communicative sciences and disorders.
