SLHS 300 - Communicative and Cognitive Development Across the Lifespan Units: 3 Acquisition and development of speech, language, cognition, and communication from infancy through the lifespan in typically developing individuals. Topics include language and cognitive developmental milestones, development of pragmatic skills, and changes in these abilities across the lifespan.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: PSYC 100. Prerequisites: B.S. Speech Pathology and Audiology majors or B.A. Liberal Studies: Concentration in Studies in Educational Psychology major. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - describe the structural bases of human communication, and the theories of language development.
- identify the domains of language (form, content, and use) in each developmental stage from infancy through typical ageing.
- describe the relationship between cognitive and communicative development in typically developing individuals.
- understand cultural influences on language development
- identify stages of language acquisition in bilingual individuals
