HIST 499 - History Research Capstone

Units: 4
Seminar in advanced historical methods through completion of research essay (6,000 word minimum) derived from primary sources. Research in Bay Area libraries and/or digital archives. Peer editing and review. Oral presentation recorded or in person at the Wanda Washington History Conference.

Prerequisites: HIST 201 and HIST 301W, and HIST 400.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online Asynchronous or Online Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Identify historical arguments, derived from primary sources.

2. Synthesize primary with secondary sources.

3. Appropriately employ summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation.

4. Apply the Chicago-style citation system consistently.

5. Consider diverse historical sources for credibility, position, perspective, and relevance.

6. Locate relevant primary sources in physical and/or digital archives.

7. Demonstrate systematic cataloging of source materials.

8. Construct an historical argument, derived from primary and secondary sources.

9. Collaborate in constructive peer editing and review.

10. Present historical findings through oral projects.

11. Prepare to submit article to the undergraduate journal, East Bay Historia.
