BIOL 601A - Foundations of Scientific Research

BIOL 601A aims to provide practical training in skills that are essential for conducting and presenting research including but not limited to accessing/evaluating/citing the scientific literature, creating compelling graphics, maintaining an organized lab notebook and delivering effective presentations.

Prerequisites: M.S. Biological Science major.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Access, organize, annotate and cite relevant research materials, effectively.
  2. Critically evaluate literature relevant to a selected research question.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the basic principles and practices of quantitative research methods, including formulating a testable hypothesis and experimental design.
  4. Maintain a well-organized digital lab notebook.
  5. Create compelling graphics including data visualization.
  6. Create and deliver effective presentations with a specific audience in mind.
