ART 246 - 3D Modeling and Animation I


Units: 3
Intermediate level 3D models used in 3D digital animation for storytelling and creative communication.  Modeling techniques & animation principles using both digital and non-digital media.

Prerequisites: All of: ART 100, ART 101, ART 102, ART 103, ART 104.
Co-requisites: ART 241.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Apply 3D modeling techniques using a range of tools to create digital and physical models for animation;
  2. Identify and use the basic vocabulary for the study and understanding of 3D modeling and animation;
  3. Demonstrate and utilize the formal elements and organizing principles of animation art including action/movement (anticipation, follow through, squash & stretch, easing, timing, cycles) extremes, tweening, sequence, narrative, shot composition, editing, and sound;
  4. Demonstrate improved media skills relevant to 3D animation (digital imaging, character & set design/making, camera, lighting, sound recording and editing, creative writing, scriptwriting, storyboarding);
  5. Apply project development and pre-production skills to the creation of 3D models and animation;
  6. Create original artworks using 3D modeling and animation methods;
  7. Critically analyze their own work, as well as examples of 3D models and animation from the larger media culture;
  8. Refine their own work based on critical feedback and self-evaluation;
  9. Understand the role of 3D modeling & animation as a medium within both historical and contemporary art practices;
  10. Collaborate with peers in the development and execution of 3D models and animation.
