PHIL 380 - Christianities in the United States


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C; Diversity
This course will cover the range of forms Christianity has taken in America over the last four centuries, with a particular emphasis on the variety of traditions present today.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. write a clear, academically rigorous, argumentative essay.

2. read excerpts from the Bible and other Christian texts, examine various interpretations of these texts, and develop arguments as to your own interpretations.

3. demonstrate knowledge of the variety of Christianities found in the U.S. and understand them in contrast to each other and in social and historical context.

  1. demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the principles, methodologies, value systems, and thought processes employed in the arts and humanities;
  2. analyze cultural production as an expression of, or reflection upon, what it means to be human; and
