MUS 324 - History of American Music Units: 3 : Breadth Area: Diversity Introduction to the musical styles, composers, and institutions that have shaped American music through history. Special emphasis will be given to the contributions of Black Americans to the foundation and development of American music.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1) Identify and speak about a range of American musical styles, from the 17th to the 21st centuries;
2) Correctly employ a range of general and specialized terms relating to music;
3) Describe the relationship between music and culture and the role music has played in the history of the United States;
4) Research a topic of your choice in American music and communicate your discoveries through writing and oral presentation.
