NURS 622 - Leadership Influence and Change


Units: 3
Concepts and theories of leadership in nursing in the context of changing healthcare systems. Skills and strategies for effective leadership including complex system thinking, organizational culture, ethics, interprofessional communication, change models, conflict resolution, characteristics of leaders and team-building are presented.

Prerequisites: M.S.N. major.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Apply leadership skills in the provision of quality nursing care, healthcare coordination, and management of healthcare delivery. Integrate theories and principles of leadership into development of personal leadership role and style.
  2. Utilize creative problem solving approaches in development of quality patient care systems.
  3. Analyze theories and strategies for change in the context of the interprofessional healthcare team and system.
  4. Demonstrate effective inter-professional and intrapersonal communication strategies in leadership in the healthcare system.
  5. Apply principles of ethics to leadership development and decision-making process.
  6. Analyze strategies for conflict management and resolution in the healthcare context.
