NURS 361 - Health Promotion for Diverse Populations Units: 3 Framework for exploration of health promotion principles and provides holistic approaches to prevention and maintenance of health and wellness for diverse populations.
Prerequisites: NURS 360. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely Online, or Hybrid. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Provide definitions of health and health promotion and explore theoretical concepts of health and wellness in diverse populations.
- Differentiate between the levels of disease prevention: primary, secondary, and tertiary and review the professional nurses’ role in promoting these levels of care.
- Examine the theoretical and practical dynamics of behavioral change from health-promotion perspective, including concepts of self-efficacy, resilience, and adherence.
- Discuss the importance of health literacy, health disparities, genetics, and social determinants in health promotion.
- Explore the nurse’s role in health promotion through effective communication, introducing concepts that include: differentiation, boundary setting, and motivational interviewing
- Analyze strategies for creating a health promotion plan to integrate healthy lifestyle choices and promote positive mental health.
- Evaluate research and evidence based practice in health promotion practice, and the importance of validated health screening tools.
- Examine health promotion policy, including Healthy People 2020, and the role of US Preventative Task Force (USPTF).
