COMM 314 - Media Theory and Practice


Units: 4
Examines media, including news, through lens of cultural studies. Students examine media content and norms that guide media production, including organizational and other ideological influences on content. Students begin practice of media production as social justice through a capstone project. 

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Explain the norms, organizational and ideological factors that influence news production;
  2. Relate journalism’s societal role to issues of social justice;
  3. Apply the principles of responsible, issue-based journalism to a particular issue or event;
  4. Demonstrate critical understanding and application of media creation and analysis.
