KIN 470 - Sport in the Local Community Units: 3 Examine how local city spaces where sport occurs are constituted and promoted according to distinguishers of race, ethnicity, social class, culture and immigration.
Prerequisites: KIN 302 or KIN 305. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, Entirely Online, or Hybrid. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Students will examine key influences such as neo-liberalism and gentrification that impact upon local community sport spaces.
- Students will use the concepts of “social space” in order to analyze social inclusion/exclusion issues that influence usage patterns.
- Students will reveal the key socio-cultural and historical factors that structure various local East Bay communities and subsequently influence sport participation.
- Students will describe the key stakeholders that manage, fund, or use local community spaces where sport occurs.
