SLHS 696 - Practicum: Assessment


Units: 2
Supervised clinical assessment and diagnosis of disorders of speech, language, hearing, cognition and swallowing. Competencies targeted include history taking, test administration, clinical data analysis, client/family counseling, oral case presentation and written report writing. Practicum Units: 1; Lab Units: 1.

Prerequisites: M.S. Speech-Language Pathology major.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: ABC/NC grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Review available background information for each diagnostic case and determine the purpose of the evaluation.
  2. Plan and complete a well-organized interview, appropriate for the information available, the informant, and client/family needs.
  3. Plan screening and/or diagnostic testing for the problem presented and client’s age and/or functional level, utilizing behavioral observation, non-standardized and standardized assessment measures, and instrumental procedures.
  4. Administer correctly all screening and diagnostic procedures: completing test protocols, language samples, phonological analyses, behavioral checklists, etc.; score, analyze and interpret accurately all evaluation results.
  5. Interpret, integrate and synthesize background information from a variety of sources, observations and assessment findings in order to formulate appropriate clinical impressions and recommendations.
  6. Present verbally overall impressions and recommendations to clients/families in a complete and organized fashion using language appropriate to the needs of the listener.
  7. Write a complete, accurate, professional report that follows an established CSUEB Clinic format and which succinctly, but completely, summarizes the outcome of each evaluation.
  8. Write an individualized letter to the client/family summarizing outcome and recommendations of each diagnostic evaluation, in terms appropriate to the reader; students will, as appropriate, write a thorough yet functional Home Program, including relevant resources, activities, and instruction for the client to use outside of the CSUEB Clinic environment.
  9. Complete promptly all written documentation associated with Diagnostic Clinic, including maintenance of clinic records and timely submission of report revisions.
  10. Adhere to the ASHA Code of Ethics with special attention to privacy regulations, appropriate referrals, and cultural sensitivity diversity issues.
