MUS 423 - Wind Ensemble Literature


Units: 3
An historical survey of compositions for wind ensemble with a focus on important composers and their respective contributions to the genre. Includes the study of a variety of wind ensemble configurations and composers. Field trips may be required.

Prerequisites: MUS 212.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Trace the historical development of the wind ensemble as a musical performance medium.
  2. Analyze works for wind ensemble by significant composers, and present findings in class and group settings
  3. Analyze works for a variety of wind ensemble configurations, i.e. wind orchestras, symphonic bands, chamber ensembles, etc.
  4. Analyze works and contributions by composers who represent a variety of diverse populations, such as female composers, composers of color, and other culturally diverse composers.
  5. Relate wind ensemble compositions to a variety of extra-musical events, such as political movements, cultural developments, national and global events, etc.
