MUS 119 - Keyboard Musicianship II


Units: 1
Group instruction in piano for music majors. Emphasis on reading from staff notation, technique, keyboard harmony, improvisation, and repertoire.

Prerequisites: MUS 118, MUS 111, MUS 115.
Co-requisites: MUS 112 and MUS 116.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Perform major and minor pentascales in all keys
  2. Perform all major scales and arpeggios, 2 octaves.
  3. Perform a basic chord progression in multiple major keys.
  4. Perform major triads and inversions.
  5. Provide basic harmonization to simple melodies.
  6. Transpose simple melodies with accompaniment.
  7. Improve reading and sight-reading abilities at the keyboard.
  8. Prepare repertoire for public performance in front of peers and instructor
  9. Improvise appropriately leveled patterns within clearly defined parameters
