COMM 465 - Identity and Difference in Media Units: 4 Examines the construction and deployment of identity in and through electronic media. Takes up theories of difference, such as intersectionality, disidentification, and homonormativity. Emphasizes marginality, border-crossings, transgression, and critical examinations of oppression and resistance.
Prerequisites: Department consent. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Read and analyze media texts to assess difference on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and other social categories;
- Use theory to evaluate the connections between media representation and issues of power and privilege, including the influence of media industries’ economic imperatives and working norms on representation;
- Formulate and justify theory-based arguments about the relationships between identity construction and media production.
