REC 355 - Community Sustainability in Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism


Units: 3
Sustainable behaviors in HRT industries, the barriers and benefits of sustainability and development of individual and community incentives. Assessment of current personal and community sustainability behaviors and opportunities to instigate change locally.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: HOS 100 and REC 100.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the theories of sustainability as related to communities as a whole.
  2. Identify the historical and current range of natural resources and community based recreation, and motives for participation.
  3. Analyze the motivations and the mandates of public, commercial and nonprofit resource managers who provide recreation, hospitality, tourism, and recreation therapy opportunities.
  4. Understand the role of social entrepreneurship in addressing the social and environmental problems communities face.
  5. Identify key theories that support social capital.
