REC 325 - Leadership, Management and Ethics in Hospitality, Recreation, Rec Therapy, and Tourism


Units: 3
Leadership and Management and principles, values, and ethical boundaries. Evaluation of personal strengths and challenges as a team member and leader. Hiring, training, motivation, discipline, legal issues, supervision, evaluation and employees with special needs.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Team Dynamics: Better understand yourself as a communicator and leader and how to participate effectively as a member of a team.
  2. Research current leaders to learn about their leadership principles, values, and ethical boundaries, and how they respond under pressure when challenged.
  3. Identify existing individual leadership skills, qualities, and styles.
  4. Examine the foundations and theories of leadership in relation to leading groups and organizations and develop an understanding of group behavior, teamwork and motivation
  5. Case studies on practical situations and suggest solutions to problems based on ethical decision-making principles.
  6. Demonstrate techniques to effective communicate with diverse populations, including active listening, assertiveness, public speaking, group facilitation and one-on-one communication, and understand how diverse perspectives affect group dynamics.
