PHYS 462 - Solid State Physics Units: 3 Introduction to the classical and quantum-based theories and models describing the physics of solids. This course includes; crystal and electronic structure, lattice dynamics, phonons, band theory, optical properties of solids, semiconductor physics and superconductivity.
Prerequisites: PHYS 126 or PHYS 137. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- compose descriptions of real and reciprocal lattice space
- identify different types of crystal structures in terms of the crystal lattice and basis
- formulate the theory of lattice vibrations and use this to determine thermal properties of solids
- qualitatively and quantitatively explain the physical properties of a solid in terms of its band structure and density of states.
- relate the underlying physics associated with semiconductors and semiconductor heterostructures (e.g., pn and npn junctions)
- relate the fundamental properties and effects of superconductors.
