ASTR 138 - Descriptive Astronomy Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-B1 A descriptive survey of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. Introduction to methods of obtaining facts and formulating principals. Overview of physical nature and evolution of solar system, stars and galaxies. Formerly PHYS 138.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Ability to relate to our planet and our solar system to the rest of the Universe in terms of size and age;
- Ability to compare and contrast various environments of solar system planets and moons;
- Qualitatively use gravitational theory to describe the motion of celestial bodies, from the small scales of planets and moons, to the much larger scales of galaxy superclusters;
- Understand how light is used to study the cosmos;
- Summarize historically significant transitions in human thought of the celestial bodies in the sky and astronomical measurements;
- Describe the basic design of optical telescope form and function.

- Demonstrate knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about the physical sciences;
- demonstrate an understanding of scientific practices, including the scientific method; and
- describe the potential limits of scientific endeavors, including the accepted standards and ethics associated with scientific inquiry.
