PHYS 451 - Electromagnetism II Units: 3 Time-varying aspects associated with electromagnetism. In particular this course covers electrodynamics, Faraday’s Law, Maxwell’s equations, propagation of electromagnetic plane wave radiation, and radiation from accelerated charges.
Prerequisites: PHYS 450. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Students will be able to analyze problems and explain a variety of complex electromagnetic phenomena utilizing the fundamental equations known as Maxwell’s Equations.
- Students will use Maxwell’s Equations and the resulting plane wave solutions to analyze models to determine how light is reflected and transmitted at interfaces, i.e., the Fresnel Equations.
- Student will use complex analysis methods to incorporate absorption of energy into models of light describing reflection from and transmission through media.
- Students will understand the basic models associated with the retarded potential formalism and the source of electromagnetic radiation, i.e. accelerating charges.
- Students will be able to explain how electric and magnetic fields transform in alternate inertial reference frames, i.e. how are fields treated in special relativity.
