NURS 411 - Maternal Newborn Nursing Practice


Units: 2
This course applies concepts related to the care of antepartal, intrapartal, postpartal and neonatal patients and families.  The focus is application of knowledge, skills, and attitudes for evidence-based maternity nursing practice. 

Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major and all of: HDEV 380, NURS 320, NURS 321, NURS 322, NURS 323, NURS 326, NURS 327.
Co-requisites: NURS 410.
Credit Restrictions: Repeated course may not count toward Major requirements.

Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: CR/NC grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to establish therapeutic communication and relationships with maternity patients and their families. 
  2. Formulate patient-centered plans of care to address the needs of childbearing families.
  3. Incorporate patient preferences, health beliefs, and personal values and resources into their plan of care.
  4. Utilize the critical components of maternity nursing to provide care to childbearing families.
  5. Formulate, implement and evaluate a plan of care for postpartum families.  
  6. Implement appropriate standards and evidence based practice guidelines in the care of childbearing families.
  7. Assess the physiological and psychosocial adaptation and social and cultural influences impacting childbearing families.
  8. Implement strategies to promote and improve maternal newborn health.
  9. Communicate and collaborate with interprofessional team members to provide care
