NURS 322 - Aging in Health and Illness

Explore theories of aging, health problems common in the aging individual, and knowledge and skill acquisition needed to care for these patients.

Prerequisites: All of: NURS 310, NURS 311, NURS 312, NURS 313, NURS 314, NURS 315, NURS 316, NURS 317.
Co-requisites: NURS 320, NURS 321 and NURS 323.
Credit Restrictions: Repeated course may not count toward Major requirements.

Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Describe the changing demographics of elders and the need for eldercare resources as related to social and political issues.
Review and compare theories of aging.
Identify the components of a comprehensive geriatric assessment.
Describe the aging changes as they relate to each body system and how they apply to diseases common in elders.
Identify and discuss psychosocial and cultural issues of elders.
Define the effects aging changes have on pharmacokinetics/dynamics in elders and discuss issues of polypharmacology.
Discuss issues related to elder abuse and safety.
Use the nursing process to care for elders and their families.
