NURS 314 - Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing

Mental health is an integral part of an individual’s well-being. This course focuses on mental health and psychiatric concepts, the relationship between mental and physical health, and the nursing diagnoses and interventions to address mental health needs of clients.

Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major.
Co-requisites: NURS 315.
Credit Restrictions: Repeated course may not count toward Major requirements.

Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Explain the role of generalist nurses and psychiatric nurses to assess and promote the mental health of clients.
Understand legal issues related to mental health services and protection of patient rights.
Demonstrate the components of cognitive, emotional, and mental status assessments.
Identify and differentiate signs and symptoms of a range of mental health conditions.
Explain the relationship between mental and physical health and the impact one has on the other.
Develop a range of techniques to establish therapeutic communication and relationships with clients across the lifespan.
Understand the range of therapeutic interventions to treat mental illness and to support and promote mental health.
Recognize the role of culture and societal norms on the presentation, assessment, and treatment of mental health concerns.
Value clients’ perspectives of their mental health and their participation in establishing and maintaining their mental health.
Examine real or perceived barriers to the provision of mental health services to clients.
