BIOL 330 - General Microbiology

Units: 5
Biology of major groups of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and viruses with emphasis on the fundamentals of microbial reproduction, growth and control. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 2

Prerequisites: BIOL 140B.
Co-requisites: CHEM 112.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Compare and contrast various microorganisms with regard to individual characteristics that foster an understanding of their life cycles, virulence, host interactions, ecology, and control;
  2. Identify and characterize microbial metabolism in terms of growth, virulence, mutualism and describe their relationship to bacterial survival and evolution;
  3. Describe basic genetic principles of prokaryotes including methods of gene expression, gene transfer, use of mutants and recombinants, and microbial control;
  4. Identify the main components of the human immune response and relate that to their role in maintaining host health;
  5. Identify the role of microorganisms in past scientific discoveries and describe their contributions to other scientific disciplines, such as biochemistry, genetics, and evolution;
  6. Identify microbiology techniques, procedures, tools, media, and results that are performed in lab;
  7. Perform common laboratory techniques for identifying and working with microbes;
  8. Describe the mechanisms underlying the techniques used in laboratory and recall the context in which they are applied;
  9. Demonstrate competency of microbiology procedures, interpretation of their results, and application of their function;
  10. Maintain an accurate laboratory notebook in which experimental results and their interpretation will be recorded.
