BIOL 230 - Introduction to Clinical Microbiology


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-B2, GE-B3
Introduction to beneficial and harmful microorganisms that interact with humans. Basic laboratory practice in handling microorganisms, including techniques of identification and culture. Designed for health sciences and nursing majors. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 1

Credit Restrictions: Not for BIOL B.S. or B.A. degree credit. Not open to students with credit for BIOL 330.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Compare and contrast various microorganisms with regard to individual characteristics that foster an understanding of their life cycles, interactions with humans, and ecology;
  2. Identify and characterize the major components of microbial metabolism and describe their relationship to bacterial survival and evolution;
  3. Describe basic genetic principles of prokaryotes including methods of gene expression and gene transfer;
  4. Identify the main components of the human immune response and relate that to their role in maintaining host health;
  5. Identify the role of microorganisms in past scientific discoveries and describe their contributions to other scientific disciplines;
  6. Describe and perform common microbiology laboratory procedures and the mechanisms by which they function;
  7. Demonstrate competency of microbiology procedures, interpretation of their results, and application of their function;
  8. Maintain an accurate laboratory notebook in which experimental results and interpretations are recorded.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about the life sciences;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of scientific practices, including the scientific method; and
