CRJ 470 - Community Based Corrections


Units: 3
Role of community-based alternatives to incarceration. Examines theories, processes, policies, and practices involved in community based programs. Topics include reentry, pre-sentence investigations, community supervision, juvenile justice, the use of electronic monitoring, community service, and restitution.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Describe the historical, theoretical, and philosophical evolution of community corrections;
  2. Identify innovative alternative sentences and their effectiveness;
  3. Discuss the evolution of probation, parole, and other community based alternative programs;
  4. Describe the roles of community corrections officers;
  5. List the various components of pre- sentence investigation reports;
  6. Analyze the impact of public perception and policy on community based corrections programs;
  7. Describe the continuum of community based alternative programs;
  8. Identify the significance of the classification of offenders.
