CHEM 111 - General Chemistry I Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-B1 Fundamental principles of chemistry: periodic trends, composition of compounds and solutions, stoichiometry, gases, heat and enthalpy, atomic and molecular structure, bonding.
Co-requisites: CHEM 111L; MATH 120, MATH 125, or MATH 130. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-B1 - Lower Division Physical Science Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Classify the properties and transformations of matter.
- Explain the periodic properties of elements.
- Infer and quantify the composition of compounds and solutions.
- Predict the outcome of chemical reactions.
- Model thermochemical transformations at constant volume or pressure.
- Apply the quantum mechanical model to explain atomic structure.
- Determine molecular bonding using Lewis, molecular orbital, and valence bond theories.
- Predict molecular geometries using VSEPR theory.
- Relate the properties of gases using gas laws.
