ANTH 333 - Women in Cross-Cultural Perspective

Similarities and differences in women’s experiences in various societies around the world. Questions concerning gender identity, sexuality, marriage, the family, work, power, and intersections of gender with age, class and other inequalities.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-2 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely Online.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Summarize, compare, synthesize, and critique women’s experiences in various cultures including gender identity, work, family, reproduction and power.
Compare the ways in which women are differentially treated based on sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic class, age, reproductive ability, ethnicity, disability, reproductive status etc.
Critically analyze issues about how much of a person’s gendered experience is due to biology and how much is due to culture.
Examine what cross-cultural encounters between men and women reveal about cultures themselves.
Identify pragmatic ways that applying anthropological methods and perspectives, can promote real world solutions and equity and social justice for diverse cultural groups. Apply knowledge of diversity and multicultural competence to promote equity and social justice.
Perceive social groups and human diversity sensitively and respectfully, develop empathy and evaluate social groups and situations while recognizing one’s own biases and stereotypes (ethnocentrism).
Communicate effectively in writing; clearly, logically and persuasively illuminating main concepts of women in cross-cultural perspectives.
