ENGL 361 - Science Fiction: Speculative Fiction Units: 4; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C A study of poems, short stories, and novels from the genre widely known as science fiction. An examination of major themes, canonical authors, contemporary critical approaches, and transformative texts.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements, ENGL 204. Prerequisites: Requires completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-C - Upper Division Arts or Humanities Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Analyze and interpret works within the Science Fiction genre;
- Write in clear and cogent prose;
- Demonstrate knowledge of key Science Fiction texts;
- use critical theory to examine literary texts;
- conduct research relevant to the science fiction genre and analyze connections among literary works and social issues.
